Design notes:

My third collaborations with designer Tom Mrazauskas, I developed the original book maquette which Tom then took over and considerably refined. Narratively the book is unusual in that it can be read from the front or the back and still make sense. The left hand pages alway dealwith the pre-1945 portion of the story, and right hand pages deal with events after 1945. Flying captions showing the dates of events link images to extended captions at the end of each section, and black and white runs through the book as a theme, reflecting the moral binaries often imposed on to the subject matter, as well as echoing the black and white telemetric colour scheme of test rockets.
